Fitz-Hugh Ludlow and the painter Albert Bierstadt travelled together to California in 1863. Along the way, like many adventurous travellers of their time, they stopped in Salt Lake City, the renowned City of Saints. These are excerpts from Ludlow's account originally published in the April, 1864 Atlantic Magazine.
